About Rick

BA (Hons), B.S.W., M.S.W., R.S.W.

I’ve worked as a therapist for over 4 decades. My education in psychology, religious studies and social work was a foundation for my therapeutic work which was enhanced by training from some of the best therapists in Canada and the U.S..

I started my private practice in Winnipeg in 1984, eventually moving this to the Cowichan Valley where I raised my family. I’ve worked for non-profit societies, First Nations organizations, an inner city health clinic, and mental health services on the Island. I still do some work for the best crisis walk-in clinic in B.C..

I am experienced with anxiety and depression, life transitions, personal growth and helping people reach their potential. I’ve worked extensively with trauma, understand its effects, and have helped many adult survivors. I am trained in EMDR as a way of healing trauma. I also work a lot with grief and loss — with some of the most painful experiences people endure.

I trained counsellors in university, non-profit societies, and institute settings and am also a published author in my discipline.

I believe that connecting the head, the heart and the body is essential to healing the entire person, and value the spiritual dimension of life, believing that answering the cravings of the spirit moves us toward healing and wholeness. I also have an interest in and openness to extraordinary human experiences.

I work with adults, in either individual or group setting. I am registered with the BC College of Social Workers.
